TELEMEDICINE

Telemedicine value proposition in undeniable. We wanted to take advantage of this technology to help everyone involved in the cancer care. Our Piiker cancer platform supports telemedicine from ground up. While making appointments, there is an option to specify whether you want a face-to-face or telemedicine session.

There are many reasons why sometimes cancer patients cannot make it to physician’s office. Even if they do, there is lot of pain, inconvenience and cost involved. I thought, telemedicine in this scenario is very useful for everyone involved. In this blog I will briefly describe how our platform supports telemedicine from ground up.

Patient has to communicate with various treatment team members.

In our oncology specific EMR, we have option to start the telemedicine session (if that appointment was setup to be a remote session). The following screen shot shows how that interface looks in our EMR. Appropriate resource from the provider’s office will start the telemedicine session.

Patient can login into our oncology specific patient portal from their location and join this telemedicine session. The following screen shot shows how it is done in our patient portal. In this particular scenario, patient ‘Jane Doe’ is signed into her patient portal. She can look at list of her appointments and has an option to join the telemedicine session.

As I mentioned in my earlier blogs, we have the concept of creating virtual office for counselors and nutritionists in our platform. Even counselors and nutritionists can interact with patients remotely using our telemedicine support in our platform.

The following screen shot shows scheduling feature with in counselor’s virtual office. You can see that, there is an option to setup either a face-to-face or telemedicine sessions.

PANDITH

pan·dit

noun

:  a wise or learned man

Pandith is our decision support tool which will be used by the providers at the point of care. In a matter of seconds, you can search for a regimen based on various clinical criteria. If needed, you can compare two regimens side-by-side.

We put the providers in the drivers seat by providing all the information required to make a sound clinical decision. We are able to do all of this because, our regimen designer allowed to create this digital content.

When it comes to presenting oncology specific information at the point of care – we are one of the best

When we were designing our product, we just focused on WHAT we wanted and HOW we want to present this to the end user. We had utter disregard for how we are going to implement. This attitude allowed us to come up with one of the best designs. As you can see from the following screen shot, in matter of seconds, providers can short list the regimens. Once they narrow down their options, they look at the regimen details by click of a button.

Just by expanding a row (by clicking the gray arrow), provider will have access to very useful clinical information which will aid in the decision making process. In this screen shot, you can see that all the side effects caused by this regimen are easily available to the provider. Beauty of the solution is how information is made available in a most user friendly manner.

You can search for regimens based on various clinical aspects. The following screen shot shows a scenario where you can drill down to ICD codes of a given cancer type (in this case, user has selected breast cancer)

In this screen shot you can see that, provider has selected two regimens and wants to compare various details of the regimen.

Document generation – we are one of the best

We generate various documents required in the cancer treatment process. The following screen shot shows one such document. Here, provider looked up a regimen to treat brain cancer, clicked a button next to selected regimen.

Review of systems

It is important to have a highly configurable way of capturing review of systems. In our EMR , you can configure what sections you want to see and in what order as well. All the information is presented in a single page. All the configuration is performed in our administration module. These changes are stored at the practice level.

Quick patient summary

If all the relevant information is made available in a friendly manner, chances of making better clinical decisions will increase. Imagine a scenario, when provider is about to see a patient, but does remember everything about the patient’s history. Having an ability to quickly look at patient information in one glance is very valuable. Here is how we have accomplished this in our EMR.

USER MANAGEMENT

This platform has critical clinical & financial information. It needs a very sophisticated user management system. We have designed and built a powerful permission management system. You can control access to every tiny bit of information.

When you put a patient on a given regimen, we implicitly assume that all the information in this regimen is accurate. While building the regimens in your organization, we want to make sure that only authorized people are allowed to add/change information. Even when authorized people are making changes, we keep track of all the changes for auditing purposes.

Recent changes in the healthcare and payment models are forcing health delivery team to be more productive and efficient. This is putting lot of pressure on the main physicians as they will be held responsible for the overall quality and outcome. They are going to reply more on technology, tools and digital information. We want to make sure that this digital content is created and maintained in a very secure manner.

REGIMEN DESIGNER

Design a regimen (protocol) like a pro. Create a rich library of regimens. Implement a process for quality control and standardization. For a given regimen, you can control anything and everything related to cancer.

Back in the early 1980’s, if you did any “design” or “drafting” work, you were most likely working on a physical drawing board and tracing your ideas out on Vellum, Paper, or Mylar sheets using various kinds of mechanical pencil materials or maybe a Rapidograph ink applicator.  Maybe you used templates and lettering guides, or shape tracers or flexible curves. In the mid-1980’s came the first real significant influx of computerized design technologies. They were collectively termed “CAD” for Computer Aided Design.  If they were connected to manufacturing machinery, they were called “CAD/CAM” for CAD + “Computer Aided Manufacturing”. They were magical for their time. These technologies changed the landscape of designing and manufacturing.

Cancer is one of the major diseases of our times. Regimen used to treat this disease are very complex in nature. For some unknown reasons, there is no easy way to “design” a chemotherapy regimen (protocol). We created our regimen designer to fill this void.

Using our regimen designer, you can digitally capture every detail (clinical and financial) of a given regimen (protocol). You can do so in a very controlled manner. Every change is tracked to implement accountability aspects. You can build your regimen library with confidence and have a piece of mind that there won’t be any uncontrolled changes.
